Cities respond to earthquake in Haiti
GULFPORT — Mayor George Schloegel said today that South Mississippians have a deep understanding of the destruction caused by natural disasters and Gulfport stands ready to assist the people of Haiti as they begin their long road back from the devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake.
“In our hour of need in 2005, people from all over the world came to our rescue,” Mayor Schloegel said. “Now, it is our turn to pay it forward.”
The City of Gulfport joins other Coast cities, such as Biloxi and D’Iberville, in a massive relief effort for the victims of this week’s earthquake. Anyone wishing to contribute to relief efforts can do so by visiting the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org.
Here are ways to help by phone:
- Text the word "Haiti" to the number 90999 and a $10 donation will go to the Red Cross and billed to your phone.
- Call 1-800-REDCROSS and ask to make a donation.
