Gulfport honored for façade work
JACKSON — The City of Gulfport today received the Governor’s Community Projects of Excellence award for Best Katrina CDBG Community Revitalization Project.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Gulfport used grant funds from the state to launch the largest façade grant program in United States history, remaking nearly 80 building fronts in the downtown business district. The city received today’s reward based on how efficiently and purposefully it used the money.
“The money is meant to spark economic development and we feel like we certainly used it for that purpose in downtown,” said Lisa Bradley, executive director of Gulfport Main Street. “It is a great honor to receive this award.”
City leaders, including Mayor George Schloegel, former Mayor Brent Warr, CAO Dr. John Kelly, Councilwoman Libby Milner-Roland, Main Street President Johnny Olsen and Bradley made the trip to Jackson to receive the award.![]()
City leaders meet with Hosemann on harbor
JACKSON — The Schloegel administration requested a meeting with Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann today to help clear up issues regarding leases at the Gulfport Harbor.
Mayor George Schloegel, several members of the City Council and other city leaders met with Hosemann.
After the two-hour meeting, Schloegel said he was hopeful that a reasonable solution could be reached soon.
“Today’s meeting was very productive and I believe it has certainly helped move this process along,” he said. “I am very optimistic that the administration and Secretary of State we will reach a suitable compromise that will produce an agreement that can be presented to the City Council for ratification.”
A statement from the Secretary of State’s office said Hosemann believes the discussion was both “detailed and productive.”
Hosemann hopes today’s meeting leads to a “timely, long-term resolution,” according to the statement.
