Mayor highlights strides in recreation

Mayor Schloegel met with the Gulfport Business Club today and discussed numerous strides in recreation throughout the city.

The mayor told the crowd the city hopes to have the 22,000-square-foot pavilion in Jones Park open by Easter of next year. In addition, he said the entire park should be finished by the end of May.

Mayor Schloegel said the Department of Leisure Services, which oversees the park, has recently undergone a makeover of sorts, and today the department is strong, managing one golf course, three sports complexes, 600 acres of playgrounds, five boat launches, six piers, eight walking tracks, eight tennis courts, five splashpads, nine community centers, three gymnasiums, a swimming pool and much more.

As the mayor listed the many achievements in recreation, he praised Harrison County supervisors Kim Savant and William Martin for their support on dozens of recent projects, saying "those two men are blessings from Heaven."
