Start walking

GULFPORT — Mayor George Schloegel, members of the City Council and city employees will kick off National Start Walking Day this morning at 11:30 a.m. with a walk from City Hall to the CTA garage downtown.

Mayor Schloegel is inviting citizens to grab their sneakers and renew a pledge to start walking and live healthy. National Start Walking Day is held every year during the first week in April to promote healthy living in an effort to fight against heart disease.

“The weather this time of year makes for the perfect time for renewal,” Mayor Schloegel said. “Let’s renew our commitment to living healthy, not only for ourselves, but for our families. We want to be active and healthy so we can enjoy our lives and the time we get to spend with the ones we love, and today is a great day to start.”

The American Heart Association says National Start Walking Day is a time for Americans to pledge to start walking and to become active, especially in the workplace.

Centennial Plaza has new website

The City of Gulfport and the Gulfport Redevelopment Commission yesterday launched a new website to promote the possibilities of Centennial Plaza to the world.

Later this month, the GRC will hold a developers’ summit to market our city and Centennial Plaza to investors from around the country.

The goal is to find a developer willing to turn the old VA into Centennial Plaza, a thriving center of hotels, conventions, retail and commercial establishments, festivals and galas.

Visit www.gulfportcentennialplaza.com to learn more about this historic property and the exciting possibilities it provides.
